Working with SMJ Falconry we photograph captive birds of prey in wild settings – on natural perches with wild backdrops. We can also remove some of the jesses on occasion. Birds on these workshops include barn owl, tawny owl, little owl, long eared owl, merlin, kestrel, peregrine, red kite – and raven.! You will be given tuition on lighting, composition, exposure combinations and focusing techniques. There is a maximum of just 8 places for photographers, with an additional 2 places for non-photographers/partners.
After photographing bird of prey portraits we move on to capturing images in flight. We usually fly 3 birds, including straight line flight on pre-planned routes. This is often the most exhilarating part of the day!
Our expert falconers understand the needs of wildlife photographers and take a great deal of care to provide the best looking birds and settings for our photographic days. Species are chosen on the day, with some flexibility; please ask if you would like to photograph a specific bird. Courses take place in Oxenhope in the Pennines. N.B. To make use of the best locations we sometimes take a fairly steep (but relatively short) climb and descent. Please ask if you have any mobility issues. Yes, they are certainly suitable for beginners. I had two beginners on a course yesterday. The main thing is to ideally have a lens of at least 200mm as it makes for better portraits. If you want to know anything else just ask. Thanks for the interest.

My names Simon, I have just been working outside today, painting a house in the country and I believe ( I could be wrong but defiantly a big bird of prey) I have seen a honey buzzard over the past few days, and today it was being hassled by two crows, interesting to see!
I love my wildlife photography and it got me thinking it would be great to get the chance to photography birds of prey given the chance. I found your site and workshops on line and I was just wondering where you are actually based? I’m in south east Surrey myself. If you are reasonable local I may try and book a date for a course.
