Serbian Winter Wildlife Photography Tour

Join me on this Serbian Wildlife Tour as we photograph Winter Raptors and visit the largest Long eared Owl roost on the planet!

Dates: 9th – 13th  December 2019

£950 per person (Discount for sharing)    4 Places Available

This 4 night wildlife tour in Serbia concentrates on Winter Owls and Raptors. We mix our time between hide photography sessions and in the field wildlife watching.

We stay at the 4 Star Congress Hotel Galleria in the town of Subotica.

For keen wildlife photographers we have access to two purpose built photography hides, both using one-way glass. The raptor hide is situated at a forest edge in open country. Sunken into the ground it gives a perfect low level view and beautiful soft backgrounds. During cold snaps the hide attracts White tailed Eagles. Other species visiting during winter include: Raven, Rough legged Buzzard and Goshawk. Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier and Lesser Spotted Eagle have been recorded too; we also have chance of Red Fox and the stunning Golden Jackal! Common Buzzards and Hooded Crows are regular visitors. You will need to spend the entire day in this hide. Please note: there is no toilet – please ask if you are unsure about this situation.

We also use the Drinking Pool Hide. Set in a forest clearing, the water attracts small birds such as Hawfinch, Great spotted Woodpecker, Song Thrush, Fieldfare and Redwing – along with the usual tits and finches. This hide is particularly good for Sparrowhawk, a bird that often comes to drink and bathe. If we are lucky we may even see Goshawk, which has visited the pool a number of times.

The Owls!

In recent times Serbia has become quite famous for its wintering population of Long eared Owls. Each winter across the towns and villages of Northern Serbia, huge numbers of owls gather in their daytime roosts. We visit Kikinda, known for its large concentration of owls – where you’ll see more owls than you can shake a tripod at! We also visit less well known roosts in Vojvodina. Twilight is a very special time; watching each owl begin to wake and stir is an experience that will stay with you forever. Weather permitting, we’ll be able to watch and photograph the birds as they leave their perches to hunt.

We have some flexibility on this tour and may split into two groups. Other wildlife locations include Slano Kopovo – a wetland site which attracts thousands of Geese, Ducks and Common Crane.

Useful Information:

  • Flights from Luton arrive in Belgrade early Monday morning (alternative flights can be taken from Heathrow)
  • Please note: Serbia does not have a smoking ban; consequently many cafes and restaurants can be very smoky. We minimise the impact of this but it’s important to be aware.
  • We will be driving on some country and woodland tracks which can be very bumpy in nature.
  • The Eagle hide: please note this hide does not have a toilet. It is not mandatory that you use the hide.

Serbia is developing in Eco-tourism, working hard to develop birdwatching sites and hides for  photographers. This is an opportunity to be part of something fresh and new, not to mention experiencing the world famous Serbian hospitality – and food!
