There will be 6 days of photography with up to 8 hide sessions – early mornings and evenings. Many of the hides are one-way glass offering a wide uninterrupted perspective; it really does make a difference when waiting for birds to arrive on perches or trying to capture those difficult flight shots. We spend time in the well established Tower Hide photographing Red footed Falcon, Common Kestrel and European Roller. Other photo sessions include Low Level Hides for herons and egrets and a Drinking Pool for woodland birds including Hawfinch and Sparrowhawk.

Vibrant Bee-eaters and Hoopoes are photographed from pop-up hides at nesting sites. We also visit a Protected Nature Reserve thriving with breeding birds and a large Pygmy Cormorant colony; other likely species include Great Reed Warbler, Night Heron, Great Egret, Marsh harrier and Bearded tit. In addition, we take a Private Boat Trip through the reed-beds allows us to capture herons and egrets from a unique perspective!

Target birds include: red footed falcon, common kestrel, roller, bee-eater, hoopoe, grey heron, night heron, squacco heron, purple heron, little egret, great egret, pygmy cormorant, common cormorant, hawfinch, nightingale, red backed shrike, song thrush, tree pipit, greater spotted woodpecker, sparrowhawk, blackcap, jay, turtle dove, great reed warbler

Other possible species: Other possible species: goshawk, sparrowhawk, little owl, black woodpecker, syrian woodpecker, golden oriole, cuckoo, sand martin, bearded tit, marsh harrier, little bittern, penduline tit

Useful Information:

  • Flights are from Luton to arrive in Belgrade at midnight; an overnight stop over before travelling north (afternoon flights can be taken from Heathrow)
  • A reasonable level of fitness is required: temperatures can be around 30 degrees. The tower hide is even hotter (and requires climbing a ladder to enter). Therefore hide sessions will be in the cooler hours of early morning and evening. There is very little walking involved during the tour.
  • Please note, we will be driving on some country and woodland tracks which can be bumpy in nature.
  • There will be at least half a day to relax and explore the town of Subotica

Serbia is developing in eco-tourism and is keen to provide quality hides for bird photographers. This is an opportunity to be part of something fresh and new, not to mention experiencing the world famous Serbian hospitality!
